Nieuwe jaargang Barolo's van wijnhuis Luigi Einaudi!
2021 was een wispelturig jaar in de wijngaarden van Barolo. De winter was koud met overvloedige regen en sneeuwval, wat de waterreserves ten goede kwam – met de waterstress van de afgelopen jaren werd dit des te meer gewaardeerd. Halverwege maart stegen de temperaturen weer en de lente begon droog. Begin april waren er toch weer enkele koude dagen met ijzige winden, daar ondervonden vooral lager gelegen wijngaarden de gevolgen van. Nebbiolo ontkiemt vroeg; late koudegolven kunnen veel schade berokkenen aan nieuw ontwikkelde knoppen. Bij de Barolo-wijngaarden Luigi Einaudi was de schade gelukkig zeer beperkt.
Daarna volgde een lange periode van mooi weer en zonder grote excessen. Het was heet, maar niet té. De zomer werd verder gekenmerkt door frequente onweersbuien. Dat had bij Einaudi wel gevolgen, maar nu net niet voor de Barolo-wijngaarden. De zomer eindigde heet en droog. Eind augustus werden de wijngaarden nog even verfrist door goed getimede regenbuien. De druiven rijpten laat, de oogst vond dan ook plaats tussen de laatste dagen van september en half oktober.

De wijnmakers van Poderi Luigi Einaudi zijn zeer verguld met de wijnen die dit jaar heeft voortgebracht. De druiven waren gezond, met een optimale fenolische rijpheid. De kwaliteit van de druiven is onmiskenbaar. De bessen, zichtbaar kleiner dan die van het jaar ervoor en met een dikkere schil, zijn rijk aan aroma’s, kleur en structuur. Het hoge polyfenolgehalte is essentieel voor de productie van wijnen met structuur en evenwicht en, uiteindelijk, voor een uitstekend rijpingspotentieel.
De Barolo’s uit 2021 zijn beslist elegant en verfijnd te noemen en zullen Barolo-liefhebbers in een enkel geval vanaf nu en in veel gevallen tot aan de komende 20 jaar toe weten te bekoren! James Suckling: This exhibits violets and tar, as well as underbrush and a distant bitter-chocolate note. The palate is angular and incisive, well-constructed with a harmonious interplay between the focused acidity, fine grained tannins and delineated, fleshy fruit. Precise. 94 points. Best ever from here. Better in 2028
Antonio Galloni (Vinous): The 2021 Barolo Ludo is a very pretty entry-level offering designed for near-term drinking. Short time on the skins yielded a Barolo that emphasizes vibrant fruit, floral top notes and silky tannins. Sweet dried cherry, tobacco, cedar and crushed flowers linger. This is very nicely done. 90 points. Drinking Window 2025 – 2029

PODERI LUIGI EINAUDI BAROLO TERLO VIGNA COSTA GRIMALDI 2021
James Suckling: This wine is more restrained than fruity, with aromas of dried flowers, cinnamon, youthful red cherries, balsamic, earth and minerals. Full-bodied on the graceful and powerful palate, with super-polished tannins and refreshing acidity in the finish. 96 points. Drinkable now, but best from 2027
Monica Lerner (Robert Parker/The Wine Advocate): The Poderi Luigi Einaudi 2021 Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi is already silky and glossy in texture with a beautiful entry to the palate. There is a long slide of cassis and wild cherry followed by soft violet, sweet almond and licorice. Those Terlo tannins are firm but not excessively so, and the wine’s texture is poised to become ever-more silky in time. 95 points. Drinking Window 2026 – 2045

Monica Lerner (Robert Parker/The Wine Advocate): This is a real beauty. Poderi Luigi Einaudi has expertly managed to interpret this legendary cru in a classic vintage. The 2021 Barolo Cannubi is a finely textured wine with a long succession of aromatic high tones that include cassis, licorice, smoke, iris and something almost citrusy in character. The wine is tight but streamlined on the palate, and it pushes forward with long, polished intensity. 96 points. Drinking Window 2027 – 2045
Antonio Galloni (Vinous): The 2021 Barolo Cannubi is aromatic, bright and light on its feet. Crushed flowers, red-toned fruit, mint, white pepper and orange zest are all finely cut in this nervy, rather taut Barolo. It will be interesting to see if more mid-palate sweetness emerges over time. This had certainly come along quite a bit since I tasted it two months ago. 93 points. Drinking Window 2027 – 2043

PODERI LUIGI EINAUDI BAROLO BUSSIA 2021
Monica Lerner (Robert Parker/The Wine Advocate): The mid-weight Poderi Luigi Einaudi 2021 Barolo Bussia is a little shy on first nose and will need more time in bottle. This is a good sign for the wine’s future aging potential. You get a glimpse of the aromatic complexity on hand with delicate berry fruit tones, cinnamon and licorice root. There is an elegant earthy intensity that I often associate with the Bussia cru. 95 points. Drinking Window 2027 – 2045
Antonio Galloni (Vinous): The 2021 Barolo Bussia is a gorgeous, expressive Barolo. All the breadth of Bussia comes through in the glass, with the more laid-back, mid-weight style that is now the house signature. Deeply spiced notes meld into a core of dark red fruit. Lifted and aromatic, with understated power, the 2021 is wonderfully complex and dynamic. 94+ points. Drinking Window 2027 – 2043
